When can I visit the library?
The library is open Monday-Friday from 7:30am to 3:30pm.  Parents are welcome to visit anytime after signing in at the office.

Our library operates on a flexible schedule which means...no more waiting until library day!  Students can come to the library whenever they want or need to.

How many books can I check out?
Kindergarten-one book
First through fifth grade-two books
**earn extra book check outs and privileges by participating in library programs**
Parents-unlimited books for two weeks

If there is a special assignment in class, students are welcome to check out an extra item.

When are books due?
Books are due "when you've read them through"!  Some students choose long books that take a couple of weeks to read.  Other students like shorter titles that may only take a day or two to read.  Please return books as soon as you are finished, so other Allen friends can enjoy them, too.

What happens if an item from the library is lost or damaged?
Lost books must be paid for in order to clear students records and allow them to check out another book.  Students will be asked to send money for lost or damaged items depending on the repair or replacement cost.  The library also welcomes hard-back replacement copies of the book lost or damaged from a bookstore.

What do students learn in the library?
Research shows that children learn best when they can access information at the point of need.  Our library program is an extension of the classroom, and information skills are taught within the context of the classroom curriculum.  All students in kindergarten thourh fifth grade participate in research units planned cooperatively with teachers and the librarian to teach libray skills as they learn curriculum related information.  This integration strengthens the teaching and learning process allowing students to develop the skills necessary to locate, analyze, evaluate, interpret, and communicate information and ideas.

Who works in the library?
Mrs. Hobbie joined the Allen Elementary staff in the fall of 2009.  After teaching elementary students in the classroom for fourteen years, she went back to school to earn a master's degree in library science.  She has been serving as a school librarian for ten years.  In her free time, she enjoys reading, stamping, scrapbooking, and hanging out with her family who lives in McKinney.

Our library aide, Mrs. Aldridge, joined the Allen staff in 2012.  We are very fortunate to have her help and insight as she volunteered in several libraries before coming to work at Allen.  She likes to spend her free time reading and cooking.  She lives with her family in Frisco.
